Back in business, spring 2015 edition

Hello again, bobcats, and welcome back to another semester in (currently slippery) Athens! We’re happy to have you back, and we’re looking forward to working with you again this semester.

While this semester isn’t quite as full as last semester was in terms of the number of events, we have some quality guests in the line-up. More information is to come – we’re finalizing everything this week – but for now, here are a couple dates that you absolutely NEED to mark your calendars for:

  • Tuesday, January 20: Mark of Excellence/Welcome meeting
Get tips on how to enter SPJ’s Mark of Excellence Awards contest from OU officers and past MOE winners (OU pays for our contest entries so our deadline is by Wednesday, January 21 at 5pm!)
If you have already submitted your entries, come anyway! We’ll also be talking about what’s coming up this semester.
  • Tuesday, January 27: A Fragile Trust – screening and movie discussion
SPJ is partnering with Andy Alexander’s Ethics class to show you a documentary about the Jayson Blair scandal at The New York Times and to have a discussion about plagiarism.
  • Tuesday, February 3: Environmental Reporting
Mark Somerson, Science Editor at The Columbus Dispatch will be joining us to talk about all things environmental.
  • Friday, March 20 – Saturday, March 21: Region 4 Conference
Students and professionals from Ohio, West Virginia, western Pennsylvania and Michigan will converge on Athens for 24 hours of fun, learning, and networking at the Region 4 annual conference. Our chapter is honored to be hosting this year, and you are all invited! Stay tuned for more details.
  • Tuesday, April 14: Grammar Smackdown
Brought back by last year’s SPJ Board, the Grammar Smackdown tests both your AP Style and your patience. Students compete in teams of up to three people for bragging rights, trinkets, and cash prizes.

This is just a brief list – we have more planned for you, including socials and opportunities to volunteer with your SPJ friends.

So, with all of this and the promise of more in mind, we’ll see you on Tuesday.
