Ohio University’s SPJ will host a music journalism panel, followed by our third annual Battle of the Bands this coming Thursday evening, April 26.
The Music Journalism Panel is sponsored by UPC and will take place from 6:30 to 8 in Scripps 111 and will be a presentation for those interested in music and media and how they come together. Our panel will consist of three working music journalists: Kevin Joy of the Columbus Dispatch, Neil Shumate of Out of the Blue, a Columbus music magazine, and Paul Meara, a staff writer for HipHopDX.com. The panel will talk a little bit about their careers and their experiences, and answer questions that the students and other attendees might have about music journalism in general.
After our panel, everyone interested is invited to join us for a Battle of the Bands at The Union on West Union Street. We have selected three bands to play, beginning at 9 pm: Vagrant Beat, The Lost Boys, and Friends in Distraction. Each band will play a set and our three panelists will pick a winner of the battle, who will receive 5 hours free studio recording time at 3 Eliot Studios in Athens. Tickets for the Battle of the Bands are $4 in advance and $5 at the door, and the event is 18+.
We hope you will join us for SPJ’s music journalism events on April 26!
