As you spend the first few weeks of the quarter writing your 2012 New Year’s resolutions, what did you include on your list? Hit the gym? Eat healthy? Quit procrastinating? Well, surely you’ve remembered to add this: Become an award-winning journalist. If not, you’ve got just three more days to add it to your list!
Each year the Society of Professional Journalists presents the Mark of Excellence Awards honoring the best in student journalism. The awards offer categories for print, radio, television and online collegiate journalism. This year’s deadline is on January 25, 2012 at 11:59 p.m. (Eastern Time).
The contest is open to anyone enrolled in a college or university in the U.S. studying for an academic degree in 2011. Students who have had full-time, professional journalism experience, outside of internships, are not eligible. Entries must have been published or broadcast during the 2011 calendar year.
Entries are first judged on the regional level. First place regional winners advance to the national competition and are recognized at SPJ spring conferences. National winners will be showcased on spj.org.
Each submission by an SPJ member must be accompanied by a $9 entry fee and the entrant’s membership number. Each submission by a nonmember must be accompanied by an $18 entry fee.
Because the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism thinks highly of SPJ involvement, they’ve agreed to cover the cost of two Mark of Excellence entries for all SPJ members.
To qualify for this generous offer, you must to the following:
1.) Join SPJ. Fill out the membership application & select student membership ($37.50). Under the heading “Local Chapter Dues,” check the box and enter “$10.00” in the first blank and “Ohio University” in the second. Select your method of payment.
2.) Enter the Mark of Excellence Awards.
3.) Print off your receipt and registration confirmation form.
4.) Bring the receipt to Debbie Depeel in the Scripps main office. You will be reimbursed for the entries once the check is processed.
In addition to paying for SPJ members to enter the contest, the journalism school will recognize regional and national Mark of Excellence winners at the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism Awards banquet. First place regional and national winners will receive free tickets to the banquet.
Lastly, the journalism school will present $100 to First Place National Mark of Excellence Award winners.
