Hi everyone and welcome to Ohio University’s Society of Professional Journalists!
For our first meeting we wanted to go over a bit what SPJ actually does and how it can benefit you as members. Being a sort-of “umbrella organization” for the other journalism orgs. on campus we wanted to expel any confusion and provide our new members with some background information–not to mention pizza!
National SPJ is “the nation’s most broad-based journalism organization, dedicated to encouraging the free practice of journalism and stimulating high standards of ethical behavior.” What does that mean? It means that SPJ is the largest national journalism organization that almost above all else fights for journalists First Amendment rights as well as works to continually make YOU a better journalist!
Ohio University’s SPJ works towards that same goal! In the past we have been both National Chapter of the Year (2009-2010) but also Regional Chapter of the Year (2009-2010, 2010-2011.) We attempt to provide our members with the information and tools to make them a “jack-of-all-trades” journalist working across sequences. We bring in speakers such as Robert Anderson, producer for 60 minutes, and Hagit Limor, national SPJ president. We cover topics such as covering minorities in the media, your FOIA rights and being blocked from information as a journalist. We also provide hands-on workshops to teach our members valuable skills in areas such as video editing, design and working with audio–perfect for resume building!
Besides this we provide larger programming such as an annual “Battle-of-the-Bands,” a panel with music journalists followed by a live show by area bands, or last year’s first-ever Ohio Sunshine Summit, a conference with student journalists from across Ohio to fight for transparency and student press rights among Ohio Universities. As well as opportunities to write for our trade-publication “INC: Internship, News, Commentary.” !!
It’s not hard to see the benefits of being a member of SPJ so come join us!
